Millennium Commission Prioritises Remaining Funding To Enhance Existing Millennium Projects

The Millennium Commission published today (Friday 18th October 2002) its wish to see that the legacy which it has created with Lottery money is maximised. It is therefore advising its existing recipients of grants of remaining opportunities to apply for further grant available to enhance their projects.

The Millennium Commission announced its first grants in 1995 and has since provided nearly £1.3 billion to 198 capital projects across the UK. As part of the process of bringing the Commission's activities to a close, it has decided that it wishes to support significant enhancements to these projects with the funds available to it in the coming years. The Commission will therefore consider applications for new capital expenditure relating to Millennium Commission funded projects.

The Commission has expressed the followings preferences in considering future applications for further grant:

  • In determining applications, Commissioners will favour those seeking to expand and enhance existing projects which are best able to provide a lasting monument to the achievements and aspirations of the people of the UK.
  • The final grant decisions will be made by May 2003 and to allow for appraisal, the last applications must be received by 23 February 2003. After the end of February 2003 no further applications for enhancement of existing projects will be accepted.
