Wednesday 23rd January 2002 Millennium Commission takes a £1 million Encore The Millennium Commission today announced the launch of a new scheme which will be funded with £1 million of National Lottery money. The Millennium Encore scheme will give young people the opportunity to attend professional performing arts productions of high quality. The Commission is looking for a key organisation to run the scheme, providing cost-effective support to groups of young people to visit a broad range of major performances, including theatre, musical theatre, opera, ballet, orchestra and ensemble music productions. Millennium Commission Chair, the Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP said, "The Millennium Encore scheme is a fantastic opportunity for young people from across the UK to access a variety of high quality performances. This scheme is another way of taking learning out of the classroom and will provides a unique experience for thousands of young people. The Millennium Commission has expanded education boundaries by investing in hundreds of innovative projects and schemes with an educational element". In total, the Millennium Commission has supported over 200 projects on over 3,000 sites across the UK. It has played a major role in the creation of an amazing range of rich and varied projects promoting learning, enjoyment and understanding by funding: educational visitor centres; supporting educational institutions; and contributing resources to schools and colleges. Examples include: Magna, the science adventure centre in Rotherham; the UHI Millennium Institute, a new university using new methods of learning and teaching support; and Everyman Millennium Library, which has distributed over one million books to state schools.
