On Wednesday 26th July 2002 the Sangat Centre in Harrow will be officially opened by their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex. The Sangat Centre was awarded a Lottery grant of £271,000 from the Millennium Commission in June 2001. This grant has enabled the organisation to improve its facilities and create a focal point for community co-operation, providing essential social, recreational and welfare amenities for local residents. The Sangat Centre has been providing services for the local community since 1981 and the grant, which has been matched by funding from the Asian community, has enabled the organisation to expand on its existing work. The centre will continue to offer services such as language classes, welfare and immigration advice but additionally will provide training and research facilities, a media room and activity hall and will be fully accessible to people with disabilities. Millennium Commission Director, Mike O'Connor CBE, said "The Millennium Commission is delighted that Lottery money is providing the opportunity to celebrate and support the achievements and aspirations of ethnic minority communities throughout the country. The Sangat Community Centre is already providing essential facilities at a grassroots level for the vibrant Asian Community in Harrow. The Millennium Commission hopes that the centre will continue to be a great inspiration for the local community and will provide further opportunities for them to play an enhanced role in future of the area." The Sangat Centre is one of 10 new projects announced by the Millennium Commission in August 2001 which reflect the achievements and aspirations of ethnic minority communities. These projects, which shared a lottery grant of £24 million, are led by, or have a significant involvement of, ethnic community groups and will make a substantial contribution to the communities they are designed to serve. Other projects include high quality community and educational facilities and schemes which provide new opportunities in creative industries. As well as providing new opportunities, the projects will combat social exclusion and broaden understanding of, and co-operation with, ethnic minority communities. ends Notes to Editors 1.
