The final phase of the Leadership Development Centre, a new community facility in Islington will be officially opened on Thursday 27th June marking the successful completion of the project. Supported by a Lottery grant of £500,000 from the Millennium Commission, the centre is the first of its kind in the UK and aims to develop the leadership and skills of people of African and Caribbean origin. Phase 1 of the project, a state of the art IT suite, was opened by HRH the Prince of Wales in November 1999. Phase 2 incorporates multi-purpose conference facilities which can be used as a cinema, exhibition or theatre space. The centre also has meeting and training rooms, reception area and crèche facilities and has full wheelchair access. Mike O'Connor CBE, Director of the Millennium Commission said, "The Leadership Development Centre is one of 17 projects supported by the Millennium Commission with Lottery money following special funding rounds aimed at reflecting the achievements and aspirations of ethnic minority communities in the UK. People from all sectors of society play the Lottery and it follows that all communities should benefit. The Leadership Development Centre will provide important services for African-Caribbean communities in London and will be a great inspiration for local people helping to create role models, foster and encourage local talent and provide further opportunities for people to play an active role in their communities. " The Leadership Development Centre is part of a £44 million investment by the Millennium Commission in capital projects which reflect the achievements and aspirations of ethnic minority communities. Other projects include high quality community and educational facilities and schemes which provide new opportunities in creative industries. As well as providing new opportunities, the projects will combat social exclusion and broaden understanding of, and co-operation with, ethnic minority communities. The Leadership Development Centre forms part of a £156 million investment the Commission is making in a vast range of initiatives right across Greater London. This investment is creating jobs, boosting local economies and creating new opportunities for local people, the impact of which will be felt for years to come. -ends- Notes to Editors 1 The Millennium Commission is one of the good causes funded by the National Lottery. 2 The Millennium Commission has also supported: - Around 200 new buildings, environmental projects and visitor attractions on over 3000 sites across the UK.
