The Millennium Commission is proud to announce that 30,000 Millennium Awards have now been distributed to individuals across the UK that are committed to creating a positive change for their communities. Cumulatively Award winners in Greater London have received an amazing £16 million of Millennium Lottery money which they have invested in a range of innovative community projects across the region. The strength of the Millennium Awards Scheme lies in the huge variety of people it helps and encourages. Award winners in turn are tackling issues such as drug taking, bullying, long term illness and isolation which are so often at the heart of the community. Among the most recent individuals that have won Millennium Awards was Lucia Farinati. She will use her Champions for Change Millennium Award to curate a visual and audio art project that will take the form of a bus tour of the East End. Each tour will have the capacity to take 40 people, and a short video of the tour will be distributed to local groups. Steve Denford, Head of Awards, said “This is a great milestone for the 30,000 Millennium Award winners across the UK, their communities and for the Millennium Commission itself. I am delighted that Lottery money has been so successful at reaching so many individuals, ensuring that Lottery money is being channelled into locally led initiatives at the heart of people’s communities. I admire all of the 30,000 individuals that have had the passion and dedication to invest time, effort and commitment into improving their communities.” For more information on the case studies please call the Millennium Commission Press Office on 020 7880 2007.
