What is a Millennium Project?
Millennium Projects are the most visible part of the Commission's work - a host of buildings and environmental schemes in which over £1.3 billion of National Lottery money has been invested.
The Millennium Commission only had enough funds to support one in ten of the applications it received. Projects had to show public support and celebrate our heritage while taking us forward into the future and creating a lasting legacy for the UK. The Millennium Commission's contribution represented up to 50% of the cost of each project and the balance had to be raised by the projects.
A huge range of schemes was chosen and there are now 222 Millennium Projects on around 3,000 sites throughout the UK. These range from world-class educational attractions such as the Eden Project in Cornwall, to smaller, community-based developments such as village halls and local parks.
Something for everyone
The Millennium Commission did not state what type of projects it wanted to support. It received a whole range of applications, both large and small from woodlands to art galleries, waterways to village halls.
As a result, new science centres, city centre regeneration projects, community facilities, cycleways, parks, woodlands, stadia and bridges have changed the face of the UK.
The many visitor attractions that have been supported provide something for all tastes - from the scientist to the artist, museums and galleries have opened their doors to excite, educate and entertain. Take a look at the Things to do, places to see section to find out more about Millennium Projects you can visit.
Other Millennium Projects are improving the quality of our environment. Over £350 million has been invested in environmental improvements. Former chemical waste tips, abandoned clay pits and previously underused waterways have been transformed into hubs of activity for all to enjoy.

Millennium Enhancements
In July 2003 the Commission announced its final tranche of major Lottery grants to build on the success of existing Millennium Projects around the UK. Projects supported range from a new Education Centre for the Eden Project, enhanced children’s play centres in Glasgow to a new Millennium Square for the City of Sheffield. ReDiscover
ReDiscover was launched in July 2002, as a joint venture between the Millennium Commission, the Wellcome Trust and the Wolfson Foundation. The Commission invested £26 million in this £34 million scheme, which offered a unique opportunity for science centres and museums to renew and refresh their exhibits.
The Millennium Commission, the Wellcome Trust and the Wolfson Foundation recognised the importance of promoting public understanding of science. Science centres and museums play an important role in this respect. ReDiscover allowed them to redevelop existing resources to ensure that exhibits were kept fresh and up to date, and visitors were given new experiences. The Wellcome Trust administered ReDiscover. ReDiscover has supported 55 projects in total. For further information on the projects supported through ReDiscover, visit the newsroom or search the Millennium Project database.
